Veteran Demographics

Yakima County is home to approximately 15,694 veterans. Veterans account for about 6% of the total population.

Newer Veterans
Many of our newer veterans are returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and facing challenges that raise concerns. Our resource page seeks to connect our veterans with the services and agencies to meet our veterans needs.

National and Washington State statistics raise questions of how we are meeting the needs of our Veterans. To date:
  • 22 veteran suicides per day in the United States
  • 25% - 40% of new veterans have experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury
  • 64% of our younger veterans have deployed more than once
  • About 15% are women
  • U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 57,849 veterans are homeless on any given night
